Our MEd in Middle Grades Education is designed for individuals who currently hold a renewable Induction or Professional Level Four Certificate or equivalent in Middle Grades Education with certification in either Middle Grades Language Arts, Middle Grades Mathematics, Middle Grades Science or Middle Grades Social Studies.

The program will further and deepen your understanding of middle grade pedagogy and equip you to offer the very best education to your students鈥攖hrough tailored curriculum, analytical thinking and research-based best practices.

(Note: Individuals seeking initial certification and those who hold a non-renewable (NR) teacher certification, should pursue the Teaching M.A.T. degree rather than this Master in Education degree program.)

Our MEd in Middle Grades Education program is based upon the concept of developmentally appropriate practices and the value of diverse, intensive field experiences among diverse student populations. Graduates of the program will

Admission Requirements:

  • Applicants must complete requirements for a bachelor鈥檚 degree from a regionally accredited institution.
  • Applicants must possess or be eligible for a renewable Georgia level four teaching certificate; or possess an equivalent out-of-state certificate. The certificate must be in one of the following certification areas: Biology, Broad Field Science, Chemistry, Economics, English, Geography, History, Mathematics, Physics or Political Science. Candidates who have completed all requirements for the Georgia level four teaching certificate have until the end of the first semester to obtain the certificate. Candidates with an out-of-state certificate will not receive Georgia certification upon program completion.
  • Applicants must present a cumulative 2.50 (4.0 scale) grade point average or higher on all undergraduate and graduate work combined.
  • Applicants must submit a personal statement of purpose, not to exceed 200 words, that identifies the applicant鈥檚 reasons for pursuing graduate study and how admission into the program relates to the applicant鈥檚 professional aspirations.
  • Applicants must submit a completed 鈥淒isclosure and Affirmation Form鈥 that addresses misconduct disclosure, the Code of Ethics for Educators, and tort liability insurance.
  • Applicants may be approved for provisional admission based on the quality of the admission material presented. Provisional students must earn grades of 鈥楤鈥 or higher in their first nine (9) hours of course work after admission and meet any other stipulations outlined by the department to be converted to regular status.

*The application and all 鈥嬧媟equired documents listed on the 鈥渁dmissions requirements鈥 tab鈥 for the program must be received by the deadline.  If all required documents are not received by the deadline your application will not be considered for admission.

Georgia Southern undergraduates with a 3.00 GPA or higher can now apply to a master鈥檚 degree in less than 10 minutes鈥揳nd we鈥檒l even waive the application fee.

The Jack N. Averitt College of Graduate Studies (JNACOGS) offers a streamlined admission option for several master鈥檚 programs. Currently enrolled undergraduate students aspiring to complete a master鈥檚 degree in their current or related area of study who meet a cumulative GPA requirement set by each program can qualify for this admissions pathway. Some participating degree programs may have additional criteria for eligibility.

  • Student Learning Outcome #2: graduates will demonstrate their ability to collect, interpret, and apply assessment data to advance student learning.
  • Student Learning Outcome #3: graduates will demonstrate their ability to critically examine their classrooms through research-based reflective practices as a means to deepen their knowledge and expand their pedagogical skills.
