Students and archeologist film an episode of TIME TEAM AMERICA at Camp Lawton in Millen, Georgia. Camp Lawton, which at the close of the Civil War, was believed to be the largest prison camp in the world.

In 2012, the PBS show tracked the adventures of at Camp Lawton, a Civil War POW camp in Millen, Georgia, as they uncovered buried secrets using the latest technology and decades of expertise. The episode will premiere tonight at 9 p.m. on PBS. Host Justine Shapiro and a television crew from Oregon spent one week following the students鈥 trowels as they dug, scraped and sifted through centuries of soil to recover precious clues to the past. The show was filmed at Magnolia Springs State Park in Millen, Georgia. The area was the site of Camp Lawton, which at the close of the Civil War was believed to be the largest prison camp in the world. Camp Lawton was constructed in 1864 by the Confederate Army to replace Georgia鈥檚 notorious Andersonville prison. Camp Lawton housed more than 10,000 Union prisoners and hundreds of Confederate soldiers. The camp was only occupied for six weeks before evacuations began in the middle of the night on November 26, 1864, as the Union army approached during Sherman鈥檚 March to the Sea. Georgia Southern archaeologists believe that hasty exit may be the reason so many artifacts remained on the site. 听 The state park was established in the 1930鈥瞫, after the exact boundaries of the prison camp were no longer known. X-rays reveal Civil War artifacts at Camp Lawton

5-1 X-rays reveal Civil War artifacts at Camp Lawton

快猫app短视 archaeologists will begin a major conservation project to identify and conserve 150-year-old metal artifacts found at Camp Lawton, a Confederate Prisoner of War (POW) camp located at what is now Magnolia Springs State Park in Millen, Ga. The project is the next step in preparation for the opening of a planned History Center at the park.

As part of the project, Georgia Southern archaeologists will X-ray recovered artifacts to determine if solid metal remains inside visible corrosion. In a unique partnership, the team will be working with Gary Edwards, DVM and the staff at Gateway Animal Hospital of Statesboro who are graciously donating their time and equipment to X-ray the artifacts before conservation is attempted. 鈥淪ome of the artifacts that we have discovered are extremely corroded which is making it difficult to identify what they are. The X-ray will enable us to clearly identify the shape of the artifact if the metal has not totally corroded away,鈥 said Matt Newberry, a Georgia Southern graduate student working on the Camp Lawton project team. In the fall of 2009, 快猫app短视, in partnership with the Georgia Department of Natural Resources and U.S. Fish and Wildlife, began researching Camp Lawton, which was originally constructed in 1864 to alleviate overcrowding at Andersonville Prison. Once constructed and opened, Camp Lawton became the world鈥檚 largest prison and would eventually house more 10,000 Union POWs. The ongoing excavation of archaeological sites is just the first step in the research process. Once artifacts are recovered, especially metal, they are treated to preserve them before they are put on display. Georgia Southern archaeologists are using a variety of conservation methods to treat and preserve artifacts from Camp Lawton, ranging from mild mechanical removal of surface rust to in-depth chemical treatments. When metal artifacts are buried in the ground, they begin to corrode in the soil and will eventually reach a state of equilibrium with the water and mineral content of their new environment. After 150 years, when the artifacts have been excavated, they suddenly have an entirely different environment to react to. This causes further damage if not addressed in a timely manner. 鈥淚t is important that we work to conserve these artifacts so that they can help tell the story of Camp Lawton to future generations,鈥 said Lance Greene, Ph.D., assistant professor of Anthropology in Georgia Southern鈥檚 Department of Sociology and Anthropology. The first step in artifact conservation involves soaking the artifacts in distilled water which removes the accumulated salts. Next, any loose or disfiguring corrosion on the surface of the artifact is carefully removed. This can be delicately and slowly achieved with small hand tools if the artifact is especially fragile. Alternatively, electrolysis may be used to remove corrosion from artifacts that are solid enough to withstand the process. Electrolysis involves using an electrical current moving through a solution to stabilize corroded metals and remove accumulated rust. After the cleaning is completed, artifacts are sealed against further environmental damage and ready for display in a climate-controlled museum setting. 鈥淥nce the conservation process is completed, the Camp Lawton artifacts will be stable and ready for permanent display in the new History Center,鈥 said Greene. Camp Lawton Public Day Set for Saturday, May 4 The Georgia Southern Archaeology Team will host a Public Archaeology Day at Magnolia Springs State Park on Saturday, May 4 from 10 a.m. – 3 p.m. in celebration of Georgia Archaeology Month. Visitors will have the opportunity to assist with the ongoing excavations and see the process of conserving Camp Lawton鈥檚 metal artifacts. The event is open to the public. 快猫app短视 Archaeologists Uncover Hidden Stockade Wall at Civil War POW Camp

10-01 PBS Show TIME TEAM AMERICA Films Georgia Southern Archaeology Students at Camp Lawton快猫app短视, the Georgia Department of Natural Resources, and U.S. Fish and Wildlife archaeologists with assistance from Kennesaw State University, the University of Georgia, and the Lamar Institute have found the remains of the Camp Lawton stockade wall, establishing the actual layout and site of one of the Civil War鈥檚 largest Prisoner of War (POW) camps. 听The discovery was made at Magnolia Springs State Park located in Millen, Ga. A significant portion of the southern wall of the camp was exposed along with a section of the western wall which enabled archaeologists to project the exact location of the southwestern corner. 听听The discovery was made late last week as the hit PBS television show Time Team America documented what was found and how archaeology helps tell the story of Camp Lawton鈥檚 history. The park, along with University archaeology students and professors, will hold a public day this Saturday at Magnolia Springs State Park () in Millen, Ga. 听The event will run from 9 a.m. – 3听p.m. 听Visitors will have an opportunity to see the location of the stockade wall and discuss Camp Lawton and the television show. 鈥淲e found it. 听Standing where the corner of the Camp Lawton stockade once stood was one of the greatest moments of my archaeological career,鈥 said Sue Moore, Ph.D., professor of Anthropology in the Department of Sociology and Anthropology at 快猫app短视. A crew of geophysicists with Time Team America along with Georgia Southern and University of Georgia volunteers conducted a massive amount of research using equipment such as ground penetrating radar (GPR), magnetometry, conductivity and electro induction. These different technologies look into the soil and their specific datasets assist archaeologists in locating areas of historical interest. 鈥淚n three days we conducted more geophysical research than most sites ever do. This laid the baseline for years of future research for Georgia Southern students,鈥 said Moore. 快猫app短视 students and professors along with Time Team America archaeologists extracted several wooden timbers that were submerged in Magnolia Spring. The location of the timbers is near the place where the Camp Lawton Stockade would have crossed the spring which still flows through the park today. 听Core samples taken from these timbers will help researchers confirm they were part of the Camp Lawton Stockade. 听The largest of the timbers measured about five feet in length and weighed 400 pounds. 鈥淏eing part of the timber extraction was very interesting. It shows how archaeologists use multiple avenues to research the history of a site,鈥 said Blake Ayala, a Georgia Southern graduate student. Archaeological investigation of the Camp Lawton Stockade in the Bo Ginn National Fish Hatchery continued during the recent shooting for the television show. Work focused on uncovering more information about the more than 10,000 Union prisoners who were held in the 42-acre Confederate run prison. 听A number of excavation units were opened to explore possible huts, known as shebangs, built by the prisoners. The excavations revealed living surfaces and possible hearth features which when fully studied will shed light on the lives of the prisoners who were imprisoned at Camp Lawton nearly 150 years ago. A metal detection survey, modeled on a gridded sampling technique which helped uncover the stockade three years ago, was used to further delineate the western limits of the prison occupation area. This survey produced numerous artifacts which will reveal more about prisoner life. 听The team is keeping quiet about the additional discoveries it made until the show airs. 鈥淲hen this show airs next spring or summer, it is going to be an exciting one,鈥 said Moore. 听鈥淭hese are major discoveries that will put Camp Lawton and Magnolia Springs State Park on the map. 听We hope that this work will attract tourism to the area to support the local economy.鈥 快猫app短视, a Carnegie Doctoral/Research University founded in 1906 offers more than 120 degree programs serving more than 20,000 students. Exhibit of Newly Discovered Civil War Artifacts to Open at 快猫app短视 Museum

11-26 Georgia Southern Museum Reopens with New Exhibit after RenovationsArtifacts uncovered earlier this year at Camp Lawton, the site of the Civil War鈥檚 largest prisoner camp, will go on display Sunday, Oct. 10 at the 快猫app短视 Museum. The artifacts, which include many priceless and unique finds, were discovered by a 快猫app短视 archaeology team excavating at Magnolia Springs State Park in Millen, Ga. The team, led by University anthropology professor Sue Moore, Ph.D. and graduate student Kevin Chapman, was working to locate the stockade wall that surrounded Camp Lawton during the Civil War. In addition to locating parts of the wall, the team uncovered numerous personal artifacts left behind by soldiers who were imprisoned there or were stationed there as part of the Confederate Army. News of the discovery made headlines around the world when it was announced in August. The artifacts, which include a tobacco pipe, tourniquet buckle, and photo frame, are very personal in nature. Researchers believe many of the artifacts may have been left behind when Union prisoners of war were awakened in the middle of the night by Confederate soldiers as the camp was evacuated in advance of Sherman鈥檚 approaching army during his 鈥淢arch to the Sea.鈥 Researchers were stunned by the numerous finds at the Camp Lawton site, because artifacts from most Civil War prison camps have been lost due to farming, development and looting. In addition to the artifacts, museum displays will also educate visitors on the harsh realities of life at Camp Lawton, including a display that shows the meager amount of food allotted to each person at the camp. The exhibit will be on display Oct. 10 from 2 p.m. until 5 p.m. and then during regular 快猫app短视 Museum hours until May 1, 2011. The museum is open Tuesday through Friday from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. and on Saturday and Sunday from 2 p.m. until 5 p.m. The museum is closed Monday and on University holidays. Museum admission is $2 per person. Georgia Southern students with a valid I.D., museum members, and children under 3 years of age are admitted free of charge.
