Georgia Southern plans to refocus university sustainability efforts

Building on a decade of success, 快猫app短视 plans to enhance its Center for Sustainability by better pairing it with new academic programs and focusing its resources on larger projects.

Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs Carl Reiber has organized a transition team that will spend the next year developing a new roadmap for the center. The group met for the first time this week to begin positioning the Center for Sustainability to lead one of the values in the university鈥檚 new strategic plan: Sustainability: 快猫app短视 is a conscientious steward of resources and supports the well-being of students, faculty, staff, and communities.

鈥淥ur Center for Sustainability has enhanced our campuses locally and enhanced our reputation nationally,鈥 Reiber said. 鈥淲e can build on that while meeting a national need for well-educated and trained students in the sustainability disciplines, so we are pairing the center with our College of Sciences and Mathematics to develop strong academic program in sustainability.鈥

The center is funded by a student sustainability fee that has supported an array of projects from electric vehicle charging stations to vertebrate biodiversity surveys to bioswale development and LED lighting upgrades. Because of such efforts and a history of programming that has developed a culture of sustainability on campus, 快猫app短视 was included on the prestigious 2018 Green Ribbon Schools list by the U.S. Department of Education for its environmental accomplishments.

In addition to building a better partnership with academics, Reiber said the center has matured to one that should lead high-impact university-wide sustainability efforts.

鈥淲e want student sustainability fee dollars to go further and have an even greater impact,鈥 Reiber said. 鈥淲e want to be ready in July 2020 with bachelor鈥檚 and master鈥檚 degrees in sustainability. Additionally, I would like to develop a proposal for a doctorate focused on coastal sustainability. This will add a suite of high-impact academic programs to 快猫app短视 and will heighten our regional and national profile.鈥

Reiber said the center鈥檚 transition team will be charged with continuing the center鈥檚 impact while developing a strategic plan that allows for better coordination and leveraging of university resources with existing university units.

The transition team leading the new strategic plan for Center for Sustainability includes:

  • Carl Reiber, Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs
  • Delana Nivens, Dean of the College of Science and Mathematics
  • Lissa Leege, Professor of Biology and Director of the Center for Sustainability
  • Katie Twining, Associate Vice President for Facilities Services
  • Kelly Close, Director of Environmental Health and Safety
  • Tiffoni Buckle-McCartney, Environmental and Sustainability Manager
  • Melanie Miller, Interim Vice President for Student Affairs
  • Ken Gassiot, Associate Vice President for Student Engagement
  • Jodi Kennedy, Director of Leadership and Community Engagement

Georgia Southern continues the celebration of No Impact Week with the unveiling of the University鈥檚 first electric vehicle (EV) charging station located at the University鈥檚 Office of Parking and Transportation. The dual head EV charging station will provide students, faculty, staff and the general public with an accessible charging station, free of charge, that provides a complete charge of two electric vehicles in under four hours. Electric vehicles were available for viewing and test drives at the event. 鈥淓lectric vehicles release no tailpipe emissions and use fuel more efficiently than internal combustion engines, making them an environmentally friendlier choice,” said Lissa Leege, Ph.D., director of the University鈥檚 Center for Sustainability (CfS). 鈥淕eorgia Southern students supported the acquisition of the EV charging station with their Sustainability Fee dollars, taking yet another step toward a greener campus.鈥
Through the national charging station map, Georgia Southern鈥檚 charging station will attract travelers along I-16 in need of a charge and will enable travelers to now get from Augusta to Savannah and from Macon to Savannah.Inquiries regarding electric vehicles have increased on the Georgia Southern campus. With approximately one-third of Georgia Southern鈥檚 students coming from the Atlanta area, one of the fastest growing EV markets in the nation, the University hopes that by having the infrastructure in place it will allow those with EVs to bring them to campus. The charging station was funded by the Student Sustainability聽Fee. 鈥淚n the ever-evolving world of electric vehicles, more and more universities are implementing opportunities to practice sustainability. The Georgia Southern Parking and Transportation department is honored to make room for this EV charging station on campus,鈥 said Kristi Bryant, director of Parking and Transportation. 鈥淕eorgia Southern can now be an EV friendly school while also being a major stopping point between Statesboro and Macon, as well as Statesboro and Augusta.鈥
Georgia Southern holds the record for the longest running No Impact Week in the country. The Week is designed to help individuals become more aware of how to live a sustainable lifestyle. Numerous exhibits, events and activities focusing on environmentally friendly and healthy practices and habits will be hosted throughout the week. Participants are encouraged to take a 鈥榗arbon cleanse鈥 during the week by reducing the CO2聽emissions of their actions so they can see how no impact living can affect their lifestyles.
