The afterschool intervention program is expected to help children learn how to develop healthy habits, be aware of their own goals and motivations and enjoy new activities. The children will be monitored for changes in grades and body fat as indirect outcomes. 鈥淭he program is special because it aims to promote academic, social, physical and personal development through the vehicle of CrossFit, which is a mix of strength training, cardiovascular activities and gymnastic movements,鈥 said Gipson. For children to be eligible for CrossFit Boro Prepared for Anything – Youth Edition, they must be middle school age, attending the Bulloch County Boys and Girls Club and parents must be able to complete and submit required documents. Participants will meet for an hour three times per week, for 12 weeks. Health assessments are completed for each participant with assistance from Georgia Southern鈥檚 School of Nursing. 鈥淭he program will be beneficial and change the mindsets of the students,鈥 said Taylor Langley, a graduate assistant in the University鈥檚 College of Education. During the program, which began on August 31 with 16 participants, children perform a variety of exercises, including squats, deadlifting, jogging, rowing, pushups and situps. The CrossFit program, designed by CrossFit Boro鈥檚 Kacie Lanier, M. Ed., will give the children a full-body workout. Major sponsors for the program include Willingway, The Herb Shop and Neb Pros Nebulizer Company. The program also received sponsorships from Sea Island Bank, Ameriprise Financial, Patricia Moore APRN, Cristine Brinson and Charlene Gipson. 鈥淲e are grateful to any and all sponsors, and especially to Ryan Brack, owner of Crossfit Boro, since there is equipment not covered by the grant,鈥 said Moore. 鈥淲e鈥檝e been able to buy jump ropes, training bars and will soon purchase mats for working out on the floor.鈥 Results of the research grant will be published in the National Youth-At-Risk Journal and will be available online at the Center鈥檚 site. Tailor-Made: FMAD Starts Alteration Shop on Campus

[pb_slideshow group=”1″]   Tattered jeans and ill-fitted tops will no longer cause problems for the Georgia Southern community. The FMAD Stitch Alterations Shop, a project of the Department of Fashion Merchandising and Apparel Design (FMAD) opened on campus Sept. 1 and is opening up new possibilities for designers at the University. Marketing and design student Amber Shelton came up with the idea for a campus alterations shop while taking the Apparel I class, taught by FMAD Professor Rachel Eike, Ph.D. After performing alterations for a friend as part of an assignment, Shelton was inspired to take this to another level. She reached out to Eike and another FMAD professor, Beth Myers, Ph.D., about her idea, and soon they began working on a grant to begin the shop. 鈥淭his program is helpful to our Georgia Southern community because as college students our first thought is often comfort,鈥 said Shelton, who is shop manager for the project. 鈥淏ut as we start to explore career opportunities and internships, making the right first impression, beyond our resume, is having well-fitting professional clothing.鈥 The FMAD trio applied for a grant from the University鈥檚 Center for Sustainability (CfS) in the spring of 2015. The idea was to create a program that met the needs of students on campus for quality, affordable clothing while offering a sustainable way to reuse clothes that just needed some mending, and encouraged students like Shelton to get real-world, hands-on experience. The $2,500 grant was approved for the 2015-2016 academic year, and the team got to work immediately setting up shop. 鈥淚’m excited to see how this FMAD Stitch shop will increase our students鈥 learning and understanding of garment construction, fit, and business management,鈥 said Eike. 鈥淚’m also excited to see the quantity of garments we have processed in these first few weeks of being open and how many people we have been able to provide our skills and services to.鈥 FMAD Stitch offers hemming, fittings, button repairs, patchings and other basic alterations in lieu of purchasing more clothes or tossing ill-fitting clothes. The shop also handles scrubs and lab coat patching and alterations for clinicals, a unique, cost-efficient opportunity for hundreds of students. 鈥淣ot only do we as FMAD students get a chance to work with real life customers, but we also get to reduce how much we consume,鈥 said Shelton. 鈥淐lothes that may otherwise be tossed or left in the back of our closets are now made like new again often with just a needle and thread.鈥 The shop is located in the School of Human Ecology Building 0212, room 1006. FMAD Stitch is open on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 4:30-7 p.m. Services are completely free for all students, faculty and staff with a current Eagle ID. Customers are allotted a maximum of two, freshly-laundered garments per day to ensure a one-week turnaround. The shop is not open to the public. Student volunteers interested in gaining practical knowledge and skills in garment construction and business management are encouraged to email the shop at FMADstitch@georgiasouthern.edu to apply for this resume-building opportunity. Find the shop on Instagram, Facebook and Twitter under @FMADStitch. Share your appreciation for this unique service, and encourage the GS community to take part in this free opportunity.

快猫app短视 Receives $1.6 Million Grant for Advanced Nursing Education

NursingEventInvitation_4x9 快猫app短视’s recently received a $1.6 million grant from the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) for advanced nursing education. With the funds, Georgia Southern will establish an Advanced Practice Nurse-Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioners (APN-PMHNP) track to uniquely serve the psychiatric and mental health needs of rural and underserved communities, making it the only university in the state to focus on telemedicine training. 鈥淭his project will create innovative partnerships between the graduate nursing program at 快猫app短视 and agency clinical partners,鈥 said Dr. Melissa Garno, associate professor and BSN program director. 鈥淲e are very excited to be able to bring this educational opportunity to our state, with the goal of increasing and enriching the quality of psychiatric/mental health services in our communities.鈥 The program, which will start in fall 2015, is for baccalaureate prepared nurses earning a Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) degree, students in the Bachelor of Science in Nursing to Doctor of Nursing Practice (BSN-DNP) program, or those seeking a post-master鈥檚 certificate program. The seven-course online track will partner with clinical environments that provide team-based care, include on campus simulation learning experiences, and short summer intensive sessions with national content experts. Students in this program will learn to manage the current and evolving needs of individuals, groups, families and vulnerable populations with mental health needs in both didactic and a variety of community-based and acute care clinical settings, incorporating telehealth care delivery. Telemedicine, the use of telecommunication and information technologies in order to provide clinical health care at a distance, helps eliminate distance barriers and can improve access to medical services that would often not be consistently available in distant rural communities. 鈥淲e鈥檙e very pleased 快猫app短视 was selected for this prestigious grant, but the real winners are the people of Georgia,鈥 said Jean E. Bartels, Ph.D., RN, and interim president of Georgia Southern. 鈥淕eorgia currently ranks 45th in the nation for access to mental health care, so graduates from this new track will be in great demand to help meet the severe need for psychiatric and mental health services, especially in rural areas.鈥 Georgia Southern鈥檚 School of Nursing is consistently ranked among the top nursing programs in the nation by U.S. News & World Report. Its graduate programs place it at the top of the list of Georgia nursing schools, boasting a passing rate of 99 percent on certification exams. 快猫app短视, a public Carnegie Doctoral/Research University founded in 1906, offers more than 125-degree programs serving more than 20,500 students.
