Student turned journalist: Senior Harley Strickland to start work with WTOC this spring

Harley Strickland is certainly leaving a legacy for herself at Georgia Southern. The senior journalism major was crowned Miss Georgia Southern in 2016, represented the University in the Savannah St. Patrick鈥檚 Day parade, and currently broadcasts weekly Facebook live-streams with the University multimedia journalism class. So it may come as quite a surprise that prior to her academic career, Strickland said she was once a timid little girl from Claxton, Georgia. 鈥淢y granny and I would always watch her soaps, and the news would come on just before,鈥 said Strickland. 鈥淚 always admired watching the reporters and wished I could do that, but I knew I was too shy.鈥 It wasn鈥檛 until her sophomore year of high school that Strickland found her connection to the camera. Her media teacher at Pinewood Christian Academy dug up an old teleprompter for the classroom and was looking for a group of students to utilize it for a school news show. Strickland became curious, and decided to give her dream of reporting a shot within the comfort of her small class walls. She soon began co-hosting the school news show, and her showmanship began to grow. She began competing in pageants at the local level, raking in titles and scholarship money for her interview and communication skills. She slowly branched out of her comfort zone and became determined to follow her dreams, despite her reserved nature. After high school Strickland began courses at East Georgia State College, and continued competing in pageants, which helped hone her skills on stage and in front of the camera. But she knew she needed more hands-on experience if she were to reach her goals of reporting in the 鈥渞eal world.鈥 She transferred to Georgia Southern in the fall of 2015 and declared a journalism major. She joined the University鈥檚 student media group and worked with their video component, 鈥淭he Circle.鈥 Everything was going perfectly for the budding star reporter until her world came to a halt in 2016. Her father was diagnosed with cancer and given a few months to live. Strickland was overwhelmed with grief, and the added worry of classwork and looming projects left her feeling helpless. She decided to confide in the University鈥檚 Dean of Students, Patrice Jackson, Ph.D., to share her situation. 鈥淒ean Jackson was amazing,鈥 said Strickland. 鈥淪he really listened and cared about my situation. She told me not to worry about my classes, that people would work with me. It was so genuine, and it made a terrible situation into one of my fondest memories at Georgia Southern. It鈥檚 when I realized the true close-knit community we have.鈥 University faculty and staff showed up for her father鈥檚 viewing, and many talked with her personally to show support and kindness. 鈥淧eople just really take the time here,鈥 she said. The outpour of love Strickland felt from her community and Georgia Southern family kept her pushing toward her goals. She pressed on in her academics and eventually landed an internship with Savannah news station WTOC. Strickland spent her final summer in college getting hands-on experience in the newsroom under the tutelage of University alumnus WTOC Bureau Chief Dal Cannady. Since completing her internship at WTOC, Strickland was hired to host the channel鈥檚 annual Holiday Gift Guide, and will also begin a full-time position as an assistant news specialist after graduation. She credits much of her academic and career success to her time at Georgia Southern. 鈥淚f it weren鈥檛 for this University, for the amazing faculty and staff who took the time to give me personal feedback and criticism, I would never have been able to do this,鈥 she said. 鈥淒r. Dean Cummings [Ph.D., assistant professor of multimedia film and production] and Dr. Jennifer Kowalewski [Ph.D., associate professor of multimedia journalism], especially, made time to make sure I had the skills to be successful. I鈥檓 so grateful for that.鈥 Strickland was recently inducted into the University鈥檚 chapter of the National Honors Society of Leadership and & Success and is set to graduate magna cum laude in December. 快猫app短视, a public Carnegie Doctoral/Research University founded in 1906, offers 118 degree programs serving 20,418 students. Double Eagle gives back to soldiers overseas

听 Double Eagle Sarah Beth Todd (鈥11, 鈥13) is no stranger to serving her community. At various points throughout her academic career at Georgia Southern, Todd served as a University leader, leader, , Eagle Entertainment (now ) publicity chair, and Habitat for Humanity Statesboro ReStore volunteer among her many other activities and services. 鈥淚 did a lot of different service work at Georgia Southern and felt like the University really helped me realize my passion for that,鈥 said Todd. 鈥淏efore even starting as a freshman at BUILD, I really got a taste of working for Habitat for Humanity right off the bat, and it made me want to get more involved.鈥 So it鈥檚 no surprise that just a few years later, Todd is continuing to serve by spearheading Georgia Power鈥檚 participation in The Bert Show鈥檚 鈥鈥 initiative. A pricing analyst for the company, Todd has spent the last three years dedicating her time giving back to Georgia Power and her community. She is a volunteer and embodies the spirit of the company鈥檚 motto, 鈥淲e鈥檙e a citizen wherever we serve.鈥 In early 2016, Todd began encouraging her co-workers to participate in 鈥淭he Big Thank You,鈥 an initiative to send letters of gratitude to American soldiers stationed overseas. The letters are delivered annually on Thanksgiving week. 鈥淚 have family, some who have previously served and some who are currently serving in the military,鈥 said Todd. 鈥淚 find 鈥楾he Big Thank You鈥 is a simple way to bring a lot of joy to someone鈥檚 life.鈥 Since starting the project, Todd said she has received emails from veterans who have expressed their gratitude for this project, often saying that receiving mail overseas is the best part of their entire week. 鈥淥ne [veteran] recently told me the very first time he was deployed overseas was over Christmas,鈥 she said. 鈥淲alking off a plane in the Middle East and receiving a sweet letter really meant a lot to him. He still has that letter to this day. The personal impact it has on people like that 鈥 that鈥檚 what got me engaged.鈥 In her first year leading the initiative, Todd helped collect 1,000 handwritten letters. She set a goal to increase the number of letters each year, and collected 50 more letters for 2017. Next year she intends to reach out even more in the community and send at least 1,500 letters to soldiers. In addition to her efforts with 鈥淭he Big Thank You,鈥 Todd participates annually in the Georgia Power-sponsored American Cancer Society relay. This three-day run from Georgia Power鈥檚 headquarters in Atlanta all the way to St. Simons Island is just another way Todd likes to give back. 鈥淭hat race and the letter-writing campaign are truly my heart,鈥 she said. Todd is thankful every day for her time at Georgia Southern for helping get her started in her career and opened her heart to serving others wherever she can. 鈥淢y background is all sales and marketing, and Georgia Southern prepared me very well for my career,鈥 she said. 鈥淔rom the endless job opportunities 听on campus that gave me directly applicable work experience, to resume critiques and practice interviews I had ample opportunity to grow. Now my MBA is helping me with the financial and pricing aspect of what I鈥檓 currently doing. 鈥淚鈥檓 so proud of how far I鈥檝e come, and I attribute a lot of my success to my education and my experiences and my friends that I met at Georgia Southern. I couldn鈥檛 be prouder to be an alumna.鈥 快猫app短视, a public Carnegie Doctoral/Research University founded in 1906, offers 118 degree programs serving 20,418 students. SGC International Member鈥檚 Traveling Exhibition opens at the Center for Art & Theatre

快猫app短视鈥檚 Betty Foy Sanders Department of Art presents the 2015-2018 SGC International Member鈥檚 Traveling Exhibition听through听Feb. 12 on campus in the Contemporary Gallery of the Center for Art & Theatre. The exhibition includes a reception Feb. 11 at 6 p.m. in the gallery. The events are free and the public is welcome. The exhibition features 52 works from 51 North American and international artists. It is a showcase for the diversity of printmaking processes and techniques and the vibrancy of the medium in contemporary art. 快猫app短视 Center for Art & Theatre Gallery Director Jason Hoelscher notes, 鈥淭he wide range of imagery, styles and techniques on view鈥not to mention the sheer number of artworks included鈥make this a must-see exhibition, with something for everyone.鈥 SGC International is the largest organization in North America devoted to all aspects of printmaking. 听This traveling exhibition was juried by Ruth Weisberg of the University of Southern California Roski School. 鈥淚 think all successful prints retain some aura of printmaking facture; some evocation of that special visual quality, be it a sedimentar pool of litho wash, the very physical gouge in a woodcut, or the incisiveness of the etched line. All of these graphic qualities serve to distinguish prints from the slippery or roughly brushed surface of a painting,鈥 Weisberg writes. 鈥淭he images chosen, the juxtapositions and evocations are not just casual or uncaring choices. Something is being owned, and something is being defined, be it about being human 鈥 or even, as we have seen, about not being human. So in the end it is some manifestation of the printmaker鈥檚 skill, imagination and obsession that leads to the intrigue and visual seduction of the printed image.鈥 SGC International was founded in 1972 by Boyd Saunders from the University of South Carolina. Each year, SGC International鈥檚 annual conference is attended by more than 1,500 people who discuss, explore and celebrate all forms of printmaking and related disciplines. The 2015-2018 Member鈥檚 Traveling Exhibition originated at the conference in Knoxville, Tennessee, in March 2015. 听 The College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences (CLASS) is the largest of the eight colleges that make up 快猫app短视, and it plays a central role in every student鈥檚 core of knowledge. Alumnae artists return to Statesboro to showcase works

快猫app短视鈥檚 Betty Foy Sanders Department of Art presents Structural Findings听through Feb. 12 in the University Gallery of the Center for Art & Theatre. The exhibition includes an artist lecture Thursday, Feb. 11, at 5 p.m. in the Visual Arts Building, room 2071, followed immediately by an artist reception in the gallery. The events are free and the public is welcome. Structural Findings features work from 快猫app短视 alumnae Jean Gray Mohs and Lois Harvey. It is a collection of mixed media work and ceramic sculptures that explore the idea of structures in material and in concept. 听The exhibition examines the new routines, patterns and relationships that materialize after a pivotal shift in one鈥檚 life and offers a tangible representation of how changes in one鈥檚 perspective determines his or her perception of the world. 鈥淭hese artworks attempt to capture and reconcile the transformations that shifted in my role within society after becoming a mother,鈥 Mohs wrote. 鈥淭he works represent two intersecting and overlapping planes of disharmonic, ethereal space within the framework of an architectural place. The precise use of material and movement is meant to pair a confined isolated space within a more expansive atmospheric place. The resulting architectural landscapes depict a richly layered composition that invites the viewer to look within.鈥 Harvey uses her ceramic sculptures to translate an intangible physiological experience with the inherently tangible material of clay. Harvey writes, 鈥淭his past year I transitioned into a new community after moving from Georgia to Philadelphia. This work represents my desire to understand and record how the structures of my relationships and identity have changed through this life experience.鈥 Gallery Director Jason Hoelscher says, 鈥淲e are excited to present the work of two such accomplished Georgia Southern alumnae. While their works are compelling individually, when teamed together they highlight and articulate one another very interestingly, creating a dialogue between ways of mark-making in both two and three dimensions.鈥 Mohs received her Bachelor of Fine Arts in 2002 and a Masters of Art in Teaching in 2008 and currently is an active artist residing in North Carolina. Her work has been seen in Southern Living, Traditional Home and has been shown around the world. She recently released her first illustrated children鈥檚 book, 鈥淢amalu鈥檚 Secrets,鈥 which can be found at Amazon.com. Harvey is from Statesboro, Georgia, and received a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Ceramics in 2014. She lives and works in Philadelphia and is on the staff of The Clay Studio, a non-profit ceramic arts education institution. Georgia Southern Alumnus Finds New Human Relative

STATESBORO, Ga. 鈥 听A Georgia Southern alumnus is leading a group of scientists who claim to have found the bones of a new species in our human ancestry. Paleoanthropologist Lee Berger (鈥89) led a team of around 30 scientists deep inside a cave in South Africa where they discovered more than 1,500 fossils, representing some 15 individuals from the Homo genus, but with significant differences from any known species. Berger and his team named the new species Homo naledi, and it is the first discovery of its kind in the world. The find has been covered by a wide range of national and international news outlets, and experts suggest the species will rewrite the history books concerning the origins of our human family tree. An exact date on Homo naledi has not been determined, but the species could date back as far as 2.8 million years ago. Berger graduated from Georgia Southern with a Bachelor of Arts in anthropology and holds a doctoral degree in palaeo-anthropology from the University of Witwatersand in Johannesburg, South Africa. He is currently a professor at the University of Witwatersand. His find will be featured in the October issue of the National Geographic. Berger and his mother are in the process of starting two endowments at Georgia Southern, the Archeological Federal Depository on the newly announced South Campus and the Lee Berger Endowed Professorship.
